ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Janet Martinez is a licensed social worker. She has a bachelor degree in forensic psychology and a masters in social work, with over 18 years of field experience.
Her past work entailed working with children & family who were impacted by foster care, preventive service, with the child welfare system. She has done Mental Health consolations for the administration of children services (ACS) where she provided psycho educational training to ACS staff on mental illness around the children / families they served. Her experience also includes working directly in the community with severely mentally ill population. She has worked with individuals via Accretive Community Treatment (ACT). Provided home visits to assess patients living environment, delivered psychotropic medication, assessing their mental stability and evaluate the need for inpatient hospitalizations.
Presently Janet is a social work supervisor, working for the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene. She supervises 9 social workers, by guiding them in their monitoring of mental health treatment / services ( outpatient treatment with therapist, psychiatrist and case managers, who follow our patients) close to 400, mandated and severely mentally Ill individuals via Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT).
AOT came about In 1999. “New York State Enacted Legislation that provides for assisted outpatient treatment for certain people with mental illness who, in view of their treatment history and present circumstances, are unlikely to survive safely in the community without supervision. This law is commonly referred to as “Kendra’s Law” and is set forth in §9.60 of the Mental Hygiene Law. It was named after Kendra Webdale, a young woman who died in January 1999 after being pushed in front of a New York City subway train by a person who was living in the community at the time, but was not receiving treatment for his mental illness.”
In addition to the above, Janet also has a private office in Central Valley NY. There she works with voluntary individuals, who sees her for individual issues, couples therapy and family therapy.
Janet has also done post masters trainings in eating disorder/ body image, pre and post suicidal preparation, psycho education groups with patents and understanding mental illness, medication implication, side effects / their adult children, who have a mental illness diagnoses.
